1) CREDITCARD ETHERNET+MODEM 33.6 CHARACTERISTICS
   ==============================================
This release of Xircom's CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 has the
   following characteristics:

-Card and Socket Services is a software specification defined by the
PCMCIA organization. Its purpose is to serve as an intermediary
between the network device driver and the system resources required by
    the PCMCIA Adapter.

-Intended for use with Intel 82365 PCIC, Databook TCIC, Cirrus Logic
CL-PD6710 or CL-PD6720, or Toshiba ICCNT PCMCIA interface chips.

-Variable interrupts, 3 to 15, default interrupt 5.

-Variable IO window, 16 bytes needed for memory mapped mode and 32 bytes
needed for IO mode, with default base at 320h.

-Requires an 8Kbyte memory window on an 8Kbyte boundary, within segment
    A000h to EF00h, default is D200h.

*** NOTE: WE DO NOT SUPPORT THE D000-D0FF SEGMENT. SEE SECTION 4
    *** UNDER MEMORY RANGE NOTES.

-Keyword support to disable link integrity.

-Full Duplex capabilities increases bandwith to 20Mbps.

-Advanced Look-Ahead Pipelining drivers for superior ethernet
    performance.

-Windows and DOS-based installation program automatically configures PC
    and NOS setup.

-XPSTEST utility for enhanced diagnostic testing.

2) RELEASE NOTES/KNOWN LIMITATIONS
   ===============================

   Supported Environments
   ----------------------
With this release, the environments supported are as follows:

-NDIS 3.0 drivers for Microsoft Windows '95 (CEM33XPS.VXD), Microsoft
Windows for Workgroups 3.11 (CEM33XPS.386) and Windows NT 3.1,
    3.5, 3.51 (CEM33XPS.SYS)
   -DOS ODI Driver (XPSODI.COM)
   -Novell 32-Bit Server/ODI Client Driver (XPSODI.LAN)
   -DOS NDIS2 Driver (XPSNDIS.EXE)
   -Packet Driver (XPSPD.COM)
   -OS/2 ODI Driver (XPSODI.OS2)
   -OS/2 NDIS2 Driver (XPSNDIS.OS2)
   -Diagnostic test program (XPSTEST.EXE)
   -Modem only driver (CMENABLE.COM)

   Known Limitations
   -----------------

-When running Windows for Workgroups with the ODI driver, NOEARLYRX and
NOEARLYTX keywords should be added to the NET.CFG. Failure to include
these keywords may result in network errors and/or erratic Windows
operation. This will be supported in a future release.

-The Windows for Workgroups NDIS 3.0 driver does not currently support
modem operation under DOS. If you require modem operation under DOS,
the NDIS 2.01 driver will provide both network and modem functionality.
This will be supported in a future release.

-The default memory exclusion on some laptops is not large enough for
the Installation Program to successfully complete. We recommend
reviewing the CONFIG.SYS and verifying the EMM386.EXE entry has a memory
    exclusion of at least 16K.
    . examples:
    . DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=C800-CBFF
    . or
    . DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=D000-D3FF

-If using SystemSoft Card and Socket Services and Windows, Xircom
recommends using the native Microsoft communications driver. This is
accomplished by ensuring the COMM.DRV statement in the SYSTEM.INI file
    reads COMM.DRV=COMM.DRV.

-When connected to LAN Requester Server, the CEM33 may occasionally
lose network connection. This is seen when using the XPSNDIS driver
with Windows for Workgroups 3.11 or Windows 3.1.

-The Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 2 upgrade causes the CEM33 adapter to
stop functioning. We recommend that you upgrade to Service Pack 4.

Future releases will be available through the Xircom BBS and CompuServe
forum. See the "Xircom Technical Support" section at the end of this
document for more details about accessing these services.

3) CXCFG.EXE CONFIGURATION UTILITY
   ===============================
Supplied on the Network Drivers disk is a utility called CXCFG.EXE.
The utility can be run from the DOS command line or included in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file or the CONFIG.SYS file. The CXCFG.EXE utility allows
the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 to become a client of Card
Services. This is mandatory to support the functions of Card and Socket
Services. CXCFG.EXE must be loaded prior to loading a network driver when
   using Card and Socket Services.

4) SPECIAL CONFIGURATION NOTES
   ===========================

   Windows '95
   -----------
If this is your first installation of CEM33 software, then follow the
installation steps in the Quick Installation Card or User's Guide.

If there is a previous installation of CEM33 drivers, follow these steps
   to replace the driver:

   Method 1:
   1. Manually copy the file XPSNDIS.VXD from the diskette into the
   . WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory.
   2. Restart the computer.

   - OR -

   Method 2:
   1. Within Windows '95, double click on "Control Panel"
   2. Select "System"
   3. Select "Device Manager"
   4. Select "Multifunction Adapters"
   5. Select the Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6
   6. Click on "Properties"
   7. Click on "Driver"
   8. Select XPSNDIS.VXD from the list of available drivers
   9. Click on "Change Driver"
   10. Select the correct model and click on "Have Disk"
   11. You will then be prompted to insert a disk and click OK. Windows
. '95 will automatically install the new drivers.
   12. Restart the computer.

   Memory Managers
   ---------------
When using a memory manager, be certain to exclude the memory
range being used by the CreditCard adapter. An 8K range will
need to be excluded within C000 to EF00.
   . example: device=c:\dos\himem.sys
   . device=c:\dos\emm386.exe x=D200-D3FF
This example excludes 8K starting at the D200 segment for use by
the CreditCard in a default configuration. If the CreditCard is
configured for a memory address different from the default,
be certain to exclude the appropriate memory address range.

   Memory Range Notes
   ------------------
-The CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 does not support the memory
    range D000-D0FF.

-On some machines D600-D6FF is not supported.

-The CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 supports only "even" IO addresses
   (example: 240, 260, 280, 300, 320, 340, 360). If you use an "odd" IO
address (example: 310, 330, 250) the adapter will fail to initialize.

   Full Duplex Notes
   -----------------
To utilize full duplex capabilities, your network must have full duplex
hardware in place and enabled. If your network connection does not
have full duplex and you use the FULLDUPLEX option, your network will
become unusable due to excessive collisions.

6) MODEM
   =====
We recommend that you update your modem firmware for the best connectivity
and performance. Firmware upgrades are available on the BBS, CompuServe
and World Wide Web. See "Xircom Technical Support" below for more
   information.

General Information About 33.6 Kbps Connections
   -----------------------------------------------
   - A 33.6 kbps connection requires near perfect conditions. Items that
contribute to a lower connection rate are:
. -Noisy line conditions on individual calls
. -Dirty or faulty wiring
. -Poor connection ability of the modem/fax machine on the other side
. -The Bulletin Board Service, Internet Service Provider or On Line
. Service Provider may be forwarding the call to another location
. (long distance) to extend their local calling areas.

To improve the likelihood of 33.6 kbps connections, try connecting to
   and from different locations.

   Other Tips
   ----------
   - If you experience any difficulties in faxing, make sure the fax mode
is set to "Class 1" (within your application).

   - Under Windows '95, if you need to dial strings/numbers longer than 35
characters, or experience any faxing problems, use the "NOSEMI.EXE"
utility to remove all semicolons from the Windows '95 Registry.

   To remove semicolons:
   1) Insert the Installation diskette into the floppy drive
   2) Click on Start
   3) Click on Run
   4) Type "a: nosemi".

If you want to add the semicolons back in:
   1) Insert the Installation diskette into the floppy drive
   2) Click on Start
   3) Click on Run
   4) Type "a: nosemi /u".

   - This modem may experience dropped connections or slow connect rates
when connecting to the Trailblazer modem.

7) INSTALLATION PROGRAM
   ====================
The Xircom Installation Program is provided to automate configuration of
   your PC and network drivers.

If you experience difficulties with the Installation Program, try
disabling Card and Socket Services, and run the Installation Program
   again.

If the Installation program fails when using CardTalk Card and Socket
Services, the adapter will need to be configured manually.

   DOS 6.x STARTUP MENU NOTES
   --------------------------
The Xircom CreditCard Ethernet+Modem 33.6 requires an 8K range of
your PC's memory. If you are using a memory manager such as EMM386
or QEMM, the installation program requires an 8K memory range.

If you have a memory manager definition in each of your startup (boot)
sections, the installation program will display a message which will ask
you whether you would like the program to exclude this memory range in each
of your startup options, or save the recommended changes in a separate
file so you can make changes only to the startup option or options
   you wish.

   PREVIOUS INSTALLATIONS
   ----------------------
If you have existing Novell network drivers loaded in your CONFIG.SYS or
AUTOEXEC.BAT, the Installation Program will attempt to remove (REM) the
entries since these entries could conflict with the Xircom installation.
If the installation program cannot remove these entries, you will be
prompted to REM or remove them yourself. After you remove or REM out
the existing driver entries in your system files, re-run the Xircom
installation program in order for configuration to be completed
   correctly.
