Thank you for purchasing your Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100
Adapter. Xircom has done everything to ensure that our adapters
are compatible with the widest range of portable PCs possible.
As a company, we are equally committed to customer satisfaction
and timely response to the needs and concerns of our customers.

Xircom's CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter is designed to work with
portable PC's which include a CardBus PC Card slot. CardBus is the
next generation PC Card (PCMCIA) standard. It enables portable
PC's to incorporate a PCI based 32-bit bus, which dramatically
improves performance.

As the leader in mobile networking, Xircom is leading the market in the
development of CardBus products. Because CardBus is a new technology,
support for CardBus in many popular operating systems and Card and
Socket Services software is not yet implemented.

In this README file, we have included the latest information on support

1) XIRCOM CARDBUS ETHERNET 10/100 ADAPTER CHARACTERISTICS
   =========================================================
This release of the Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter has the
   following characteristics:

-10/100Mbps connectivity - Allows portable PCs equipped with a CardBus
slot to connect to 100Base-TX Ethernet networks to take advantage
of higher network bandwidth. See model descriptions below for
    additional information.

-The CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter takes advantage of the PCI-based
32-bit bus provided by the CardBus slot. This eliminates the bottleneck
    of a 16-bit bus, thus providing high-performance 100Mb networking.

-Auto-negotiation of 10 or 100Mbps Ethernet connection rate - Upon
initialization, the adapter will automatically adopt the speed
of the network port to which it is attached, allowing it to be
used seamlessly on either 10Mbps (10Base-T) or 100Mbps
    (100Base-TX) network segments.

-Support for using a second PC Card at the same time as the Xircom
CardBus adapter in any version of Windows 95. (See machine
    specific notes for limitations.)

-Full suite of network driver support - Allows 10Mbps or 100Mbps
connection across a wide range of operating systems and networks.
Native 32-bit NDIS3 driver support for Windows 95 and Windows NT
    included.

-Windows 3.x installation program - Automatically configures both PC
and NOS setup directly from Windows versions 3.1 and 3.11.

-SNMP network management agent included - Allows a portable PC to
be managed using SNMP-based network management software.

    -Models available:

     CBE-10/100BTX Supports both 10Base-T and 100Base-TX
		      with a single cable connector

2) WHAT'S NEW IN THE 1.25 SOFTWARE DRIVER RELEASE
    ======================+=======================
-The NDIS3 (Miniport) driver, CBE.SYS, now supports the use of a
second PC Card in any version of Windows 95, including versions
     950, 950A and 950B (OSR2). See Section 6, Machine Specific
Notes for systems which do not support this feature.
-The 32-ODI driver (CBE.LAN) adds additional Promiscuous mode
     support.
-Increased compatibility support for Compaq Armada 7700 series
     portable computers.
-Increased compatibility support for IBM 760X series
     portable computers.
-Reduces Windows Protection Errors when making a configuration
change on systems with Windows 95 and a minimum of 32MB of RAM
(This alleviates a known problem in Windows 95 which is
described in Microsoft Knowledge base article Q157924).

3) NOTES REGARDING CARD AND SOCKET SERVICES
    ========================================

The Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA)
has developed specifications governing the use of PC Cards
(formerly PCMCIA cards) in personal computer systems. The software
components that implement these specifications are called Card and
Socket Services. This software supports the ability of PC Card-aware
device drivers (known as clients) to share cards, sockets and system
    resources.

The PCMCIA Association also developed the specifications for CardBus,
the new 32-bit PC Card specification. Due to the newness of the CardBus
specification, most Card and Socket Services software do not currently
    support CardBus devices.

Xircom has tested the CardBus Ethernet Adapter with the following
Card and Socket Services (supporting CardBus) as of September 15,
    1997:

    -CardWizard v. 5.3X for DOS/Windows 3.X from SystemSoft Corp.
Check with SystemSoft for complete details.

-Phoenix Card Manager 95 v. 4.0 for Windows 95 from Phoenix
     Technologies Ltd.

    -Windows 95 version 950B (OSR2)
To determine if you have Windows 95 OSR2, complete the following
     steps:
      -Click on the Start button
      -Select Settings
      -Select Control Panel
-In the Control Panel dialogue box, double click on the System
       icon
-When the System Properties dialogue box appears, the version of
Windows 95 should be displayed. You have Windows 95 OSR2 if it
       displays:
         Microsoft Windows 95
         4.00.950B

Note: If you have Windows 95 version OSR2 on your computer, you
may need a BIOS upgrade or operating system patch. More
detailed information is available in the MACHINE SPECIFIC
            NOTES section below.

Xircom is working with developers of Card and Socket Services
software to ensure compatibility between their products and the
CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter. The following products are
expected to support CardBus in the near future. Please visit
the Xircom web site for the latest CardBus information.

     Known Limitations
     -----------------

-In order to connect to a 100Base-TX Ethernet network, a Category 5
unshielded twisted pair (UTP) network cable terminating in a male
RJ-45 connector must be connected to a 100Mbps hub or switch. Check
with your LAN Administrator if you are not certain of your network
      speed and infrastructure.

-The Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter is designed to connect
to a 100Base-TX network. It does not support 100VG-AnyLAN networks.

-When running the LAN Requester install, the CBENDIS.EXE file does not
get copied to the NET directory. The file needs to be manually copied
from the Network Drivers Disk to the NET directory on the users
      hard drive.

-For Toshiba Tecra's, using the 16-bit ODI driver with the NDIS3
mapper in Windows for Workgroups is not currently supported.

-For Compaq Armada 1500 series, the 32-bit NDIS3 (miniport) driver in
Windows NT is not currently supported.

-If the CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter does not load in the top PC
Card slot on Toshiba Tecra's and Portege's, there are two remedies:
      1. Try using the CardBus adapter in the lower slot.
      2. Disable support for the infrared device by commenting out (put a
semi-colon ";" in front of) the following lines in the Windows
          SYSTEM.INI file:
          device=C:\TRANXIT\pumafir.386

-When using the 32-bit ODI driver, CBE.LAN, with Windows 95 version
OSR2, it may be necessary to install the adapter in the bottom
PC Card slot. Please refer to the Users Guide for instructions
on how to determine your version of Windows 95.

-The 32-bit ODI driver (CBE.LAN) supports promiscuous mode.
There is one limitation in its support. Fragment errors are
captured, but they are classified, counted and reported as
undersized errors. Therefore, the total count for undersized
errors includes the total of undersized and fragment errors.

-On systems with the Cirrus 6832 CardBus controller, the
     following operating systems are supported:
     	Windows 95 version 950B (OSR2)
DOS and Windows 3.X with Card and Socket Services

-On systems with Pentium 120Mhz or faster processors,
with factory installed Windows for Workgroups v. 3.11,
the NDIS2 driver may lose network connections during
downloading of data from a server.

in Windows 95 you have the option of installing one of two
drivers, an NDIS3 (also known as Miniport) driver or the
      32-bit ODI client Driver.
-Refer to the Users Guide for instructions on how to
determine your version of Windows 95. Once you have
determined the version, follow the instructions
for your version of Windows 95.

Installing in Windows 95 (Version 4.00.950 or 4.00.950a)
     --------------------------------------------------------
     1. Follow the instructions in the Users Guide for
disabling PC Card support in Windows 95. It can be
found in the section 'Installing with Microsoft
         Windows 95 Version 4.00.950 or 4.00.950a'.

     2. Install the software using the Novell Client
         32 installation software.

     ----------------------------------------------------------
     ** IMPORTANT ********************************************
Note: Windows 95 version 4.00.950b requires Client 32
for Windows 95 version 2.12 or greater. (Ask your
Network Administrator if you are unsure of the version
	of Netware Client 32 Software.)

9) INSTALLING THE OS/2 DRIVER
     ==========================

Xircom's CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter includes NDIS2 and
ODI drivers for OS/2. Currently, the Card and Socket
Services software in OS/2 does not support CardBus.
Therefore, in order to install the CardBus driver in OS/2,
OS/2's Card and Socket Services must be disabled.
Follow IBM's instructions in their documentation for
     disabling Card and Socket Services.

NDIS Driver Installation for OS/2 Warp 3.0 and 4.0
     --------------------------------------------------
     1. Remove OS/2's Card and Socket Services according
to IBM's instructions in their documentation.
     2. By default, the CardBus NDIS driver will be
installed. If you wish to install the ODI client,
the Novell Client installation program should be used.
See the OS/2 ODI Client install section for instructions.
     3. Run MPTS (Multi-Protocol Transport Services). For Warp
3.0, MPTS is on the desktop. For Warp 4.0, MPTS is in
         System Setup.
     4. In the MPTS window, click on Configure
     5. In the Configure window, select the LAN adapter and
protocols radio button, then click on Configure.
     6. In the LAPS Configuration window, in the Network Adapter
         section, click on Other Adapter.
     7. Set the path as A:\NDIS and click OK.
     8. Back at the LAPS Configuration window, in the Network
Adapter section, select Xircom CardBus Ethernet 10/100
Adapter by clicking on it and then clicking Add.
     9. In the Protocols section, select the protocols you wish
to use by clicking on the protocols and then clicking Add.
     10. In the Current Configuration section, click on Xircom
CardBus Ethernet 10/100 Adapter and click edit to edit
the driver settings. The default settings for the product
will be displayed. Generally, the default settings should
be used. The most important to check are Int & Socket. If
there is a conflict, these should be adjusted using trial
         and error.
     11. After reviewing the settings, click OK.
     12. Click OK again
     13. Click close
     14. Follow the on screen instructions to complete installation.

Note: In Warp 4.0, a free interrupt can be found by running
Hardware Manager (under System Setup). Under IRQ, look
for a free one (the program shows what's used).

ODI Driver Installation for OS/2 Warp 3.0 and 4.0
     -------------------------------------------------
     1. Remove OS/2's Card and Socket Services according to
         IBM's instructions in their documentation.
     2. In order to install Xircom's OS/2 ODI driver, the
Novell Netware Client for OS/2 installation disks
         are needed.
     3. Put disk 1 of the OS/2 client installation disks
(the WSOS2_1 disk) in the floppy drive and run INSTALL.
     4. In the NetWare Workstation for OS/2 Installation Utility
window, click on the Installation menu item and select
         'Requester on Workstation' option.
     5. In the 'Set Target Directory' Windows, set the
destination directory (default is c:\netware) and
         click OK.
     6. In the 'Requester Installation' window, select the option
'Edit config.sys and copy all files' and click OK.
     7. In the 'Step 1- choose the ODI LAN Driver' window,
click on the list box to display the list of LAN drivers.
An Installation Message window will appear. Put the Xircom
Network Drivers Disk in the floppy drive and click OK.
     8. In the list box, select CBEODI.OS2 as the LAN driver to
         install and click continue.
     9. The Installation Message window will reappear. Put the
Netware Client disk back in the floppy drive (disk WSOS2_1)
         and click OK.
     10. Follow the on screen instructions to complete the
installation of the Netware Client for OS/2 software.

10) SNMP AGENT

To use the agent under DOS, follow these instructions:
     --------------------------------------------------------------------

     1. Copy all of the SNMP directory on the Xircom Network Drivers
Disk to your hard disk drive, typically to the \NWCLIENT
         directory.

     2. Edit the SNMP.CFG file and add the correct IP address and
other configuration information. Contact your system
         administrator if necessary.

     3. Edit the NET.CFG file (typically in \NWCLIENT) to include:
         Frame Ethernet_II

     4. After the LAN driver is loaded, load the SNMP driver,
XAGENT_O.EXE, by changing to the directory where it exists,
typing XAGENT_O and press ENTER. Alternatively, add the
         following lines to AUTOEXEC.BAT:
         CD\NWCLIENT
         XAGENT_O
Note: You must change to the directory (NWCLIENT) before
